MHS Grads Uphold Legacy of Giving Back

In a recent survey of Milton Hershey SchoolŪ alumni, 79 percent of respondents said that the School had directly impacted their desire to give back to others. And they in turn, have instilled those values into their children and grandchildren.

As part of its 100th anniversary, The Hershey Company commissioned a study on behalf of MHS to find out how experiences at the School influenced alumni's individual contributions to society via such things as community service, volunteerism, and philanthropy. A survey was sent to 5,755 alumni, and 906 responded for a 15.7 percent response rate.

Among findings:

  • MHS alumni volunteer 457,000 hours per year helping their fellow Americans through a wide array of charitable causes. Their annual volunteer activities impact as many as 152,000 people.
  • The average number of hours volunteered per year by MHS grads is 67.2. The annual hours volunteered by the average American is 52.
  • Eighty-four percent of MHS grads agree that the School contributed to their desire to give back, and 61 percent agreed that their participation in community service at the School helped them to understand the importance of community service.
  • More than half agreed that their MHS commitment to community service has been transmitted to their children and grandchildren.
