Friday, April 23, 2010
Getting ready to plant your garden? Purchase some affordable plants and get some gardening tips from Milton Hershey School? students at the School's second annual open house and student plant sale at the School's Horticultural Center at 503 Meadow Lane on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For the past several months, more than 20 MHS middle and high school students have been growing plants in the School?s Horticultural Center for the event, which will feature butterfly plants, annuals, vegetable plants, and houseplants.
Student Horticulture Clubs is one of many offerings to MHS students made available through the School?s Agricultural and Environmental Education program.
"By having students participate in a sale, they have the opportunity to see something from the beginning to the end," said Horticultural Center Instructional Advisor Nan McKay.
Students start the plants from seeds and care for them until they are mature enough to sell. Students work on marketing the sale, and during the open house, they enhance their social skills as they interact with costumers.
In addition to plants, the MHS Goat Club will be selling goat milk soap, and members of the School's Monarch Watch Club will have an educational display on Monarchs and will answer questions.
Milton Hershey School 7th-grader Valmar Wilson trims back Agastache Tutti Frutti so that the plants will be in full bloom for the student plant sale, open to the public, on Saturday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
